November 9 was an important evening for 33 nonprofits across the state. It was the night of the Awards for Excellence presentation ceremony, and they were being recognized for their exemplary work for the people of Colorado. In eleven different categories, a winning organization was awarded a grant of $15,000. I asked the award winners about that evening, and their meaningful responses were filled with excitement and gratitude.
Foundations aren’t the only organizations making donations to keep nonprofits running. Some of the best nonprofits in the state are backed by businesses. On November 9, Awards for Excellence recognized one such benefactor through the Governor John A. Love Award. The award is given to a corporation that improves the quality of life for Coloradans through a demonstrated commitment to the nonprofit sector. This year, U.S. Bank proved more than deserving of this honor.
When the government gives you $100 million, that’s generally where the story is supposed to begin—and end. It is a simple narrative with a tight focus. A huge check. Lots of zeroes. The happy ending. Yet, in this story, it is only a beginning. One of several beginnings, actually.
