Developing Leaders: The Student Leadership Experience

Ben Haughton

A group of 40 student leaders from ten different Colorado universities come together three times a year to participate in El Pomar’s Student Leadership Experience. The third and final retreat was held last month on the University of Denver campus and focused on the nonprofit sector and leadership.

SLE brings together passionate and engaged college students, while providing them with the opportunity to gain leadership skills and inspire a desire to give back to the community. Past retreats have included a plethora of different activities, ranging from volunteer opportunities to guest speakers, and nonprofit visits.

As a fellow, I have had the great privilege of working with these inspiring and dedicated students. It has been remarkable to see their growth in the past year, while listening to their conversations has helped me realize the true impact of the program. As the students build relationships, they encourage, support, and motivate each other to achieve their own personal best.

It has been a true pleasure to work with the SLE program and I am excited to see what next year will bring. Our hope is that the SLE scholars will stay connected in their professional lives and continue a dialogue that inspires change and innovation.
